The complaint focused on C&A’s substandard efforts to tackle problems at a supplier in Myanmar, where the company had their clothes produced. In 2018, the management of the garment factory repressed the trade union that had just started. Our repeated attempts to get C&A to take action came to nothing.

May 15th marks nine years since the signing of the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh. So far, the trailblazing, legally binding agreement has protected over two million garment workers by making sure 1,600 factories in Bangladesh meet safety requirements, but Levis and IKEA refuse to sign.

Adidas is stealing from its workers.
Textile workers in Cambodia who produced garments for adidas, among other brands, were deprived of an estimated $109 million (USD) in wages in April-May 2021 alone, according to a comprehensive inventory by unions in 114 factories. adidas is linked to the largest wage theft in the factory sample despite high profits during the pandemic.

European Union one step closer to corporate accountability but with a long way to go
Clean Clothes Campaign cautiously welcomes the long awaited rules on corporate sustainable due diligence proposed by the European Commission. Whereas the proposal falls short of our recommendations, the introduction of a binding obligation on companies to carry out human rights and environmental due diligence is a major step toward corporate accountability. We call upon the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union as co-legislators to ensure that the legislation ultimately brings yet stronger protections for the workers and other rights holders.

Campaign targets Rana Plaza buyer Auchan for its failure to address factory safety
Today, Clean Clothes Campaign members and partners in a range of countries are starting a campaign to convince French supermarket chain Auchan (Alcampo in Spain) to sign the International Accord for Health and Safety in the Textile and Garment Industry. As a company that sourced from one of the factories in the collapsed Rana Plaza building in April 2013 in Dhaka, Bangladesh – the incident that led to the creation of the first Accord programme – Auchan has a special responsibility to sign the new safety agreement.
