JUST TRANSITION
The future of fashion must put people and planet first.
Climate change is already having the most severe impact on garment workers. Factories, where the working conditions are already terrible, are unbearably hot and without access to breaks or water, the health and safety of workers is under threat. Floods, storms, and fires destroy homes and communities, and poverty wages leave workers without savings, without security, and without the means to recover.
But the issues don’t end there. The clothing industry is one of the most polluting industries on a global scale. Factories dump chemicals and leftover ink into rivers and other water sources, waste piles up in large-scale dumping grounds, and workers are forced to breathe in toxic air and live with poisoned water. Both people and planet are suffering the direct consequences of this pollution.
Moving towards real sustainability
A just transition means transforming fashion into a system where justice for workers and the environment is non-negotiable, not just a marketing strategy. Originally made famous by the labour movement, a just transition is a strategy to ensure that no worker is left behind when we make our industries more climate-proof. We’re fighting for a transition that considers all aspects, not just greener factories, but real, tangible change for the workers within them.
We believe in a future of fashion that:
Respects and protects workers’ rights
Holds brands accountable for the harm they cause to people and the planet - and that brands are forced to repair this harm. Legally binding laws and agreements are crucial for this.
Workers, and not just brands, benefit from a greener industry
Garment workers are paid a living wage and have access to social protection during times of crisis.
Safety and freedom at work are a given. Workers should be able to work in safe factories and organise themselves, and unions should be recognised and protected.
Transparency is a must-have. Brands have to be transparent about their supply chains. This helps to expose and fight injustices that happen.
Big brands stop abusing the power they have. Brands must pay fair prices for their clothing so that factories can provide living wages, safe workplaces, and ecologically friendly practices.
This is the fashion industry we are fighting for: one that protects people, respects the planet, and leaves no one behind.

Across Europe, in twelve countries, we are working on the Fashioning a Just Transition project. Young people are already shaping the future through Youth Advisory Boards — and we want to hear from you too. What are your ideas about fashion, the climate crisis, and social justice?
Together with unions, grassroots organisations, youth movements and the public, we are writing a manifesto: the core principles for meaningful climate action in the fashion industry that put workers’ rights and livelihoods at the center.
