Brands must intervene to win release of imprisoned labour leaders in Bangladesh

Twenty-two human and labour rights organizations from around the world are calling on H&M, C&A, Inditex, Gap and VF to press for the release of unjustly imprisoned Bangladeshi union leaders and worker rights advocates and the reinstatement of 1,500 workers suspended or terminated for taking part in a wage strike. "Turn Around, H&M!" campaigners demand transparency on H&M's wage efforts

In a letter to H&M's Head of Sustainability the "Turn Around, H&M!" campaigners pointed out the different ways in which the response to CCC's public letter sent in March was unsatisfactory. Campaigners once again called for concrete data and expressed the expectation that H&M will yet live up to its commitment that 850,000 workers would be paid a living wage this year.

Our contribution to the EU Flagship initiative on garment

2015 is the European year for development. In this context, the European commission want to launch an EU flagship initiative on responsible management of the supply chain in the garment sector. Clean Clothes Campaign accepted the invitation to contribute in the identification of this flagship initiative and to participate in an informal meeting with stakeholders gathered on 23 January in Brussels.

The Clean Clothes Campaign and the Asia Floor Wage Alliance believe that being paid less than a living wage is a violation of an individual’s human rights. This report looks at the low wages being paid across six of the major garment producing countries in Asia – Cambodia, China, Bangladesh, India, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. It also looks at the responsibilities of both state and global apparel brands and their suppliers in addressing poverty wages and the steps that must be taken immediately if the garment industry is to provide a decent life for those working within it. The report was published in 2014.

"We need US$177"

On September 17th, Cambodian garment workers in 139 factories in 52 areas took part in demonstrations calling for an increase in the minimum wage to US$177. 10,000 workers wore t-shirts with the US$177 demand printed on and 100,000 stickers were distributed across the countries capital, Phnom Penh. In solidarity activists from New Jersey to Melbourne via Geneva and Brussels, also took part in actions calling for an immediate increase in the minimum wage.

€4.7 million in overdue wages

Garment company Hey Tekstil did not pay its employees from November 2011 to February 2012, then fired them without notice and failed to pay them the severance payments required by law. The workers organised actions and picket lines for months to get what is owed to them by the company. A web appeal and solidarity actions targeting Esprit have been set up to support them.

Forced to resign from union

Hera Tekstil, part of the Roteks Group, is a factory producing for H&M, Lindex and Inditex. In June 2011 the Teksif workers union started an organising campaign, which led to the recruitment of sufficient members for the trade union to register at the factory. Subsequently, workers were intimidated, forced to resign from the union and remaining unionised workers were dismissed. CCC communicated with key buyers and a Spanish trade union federation on follow up.

A battle won

Four dismissed union members from the Ismaco factory are fighting their cases in court. They were unlawfully fired by the management of the factory because of their membership of the Turkish union Deri-Teks (Deri-Is).
