Job Description

This is a technical role with a strong connection to the concrete advocacy and human rights work CCC does. The data coordinator will take the lead in the technical design and maintenance of various databases and data sources, designing an access control model, importing and exports data and designs and executes reports.

As some data sources can be messy, it requires creativity, accuracy and sometimes plain elbow grease to get data to the right places.

Tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Database work: designing the database, the reports and the data strategy behind it.
  • Producing reports and queries both for internal use and for publications and campaign work.
  • Design, build and/or coordinate outsourcing tools for easier data access.
  • Working with external parties (academia, other NGO’s, data providers) to perform data analysis.
  • Representing CCC in the tech and open data communities.
  • Admin tasks for the network (permission design, selection criteria for targeted newsletters).
  • Aligning other data like our photo database so it becomes more usable, improving tagging and metadata.
  • Wrangling, cleaning incoming data, for instance by normalising spellings of countries, brands, etc.
  • Locating and using other data sets.

Profile / You have:

  • Proven ability to work independently.
  • Accuracy and analytical thinking.
  • Strategic view on using data.
  • Ability to translate cases and user stories into technical specifications.
  • Able to coordinate and plan work with external parties.
  • A willingness to be ‘hands on’. Curiosity, creativity and willingness to try out new tools, but also knowing when ‘copy-paste’ is enough.
  • Communication skills and patience to work with colleagues who are not technical experts but content experts.
  • Familiar with designing taxonomies, classifications.
  • Familiarity with Linux command-line and graphical tools to work with data – including converting to and from various formats like csv, json.
  • Experience in data visualisation and SQL, CiviCRM, regular expressions, Tabula, OpenRefine, LibreOffice, Visual Studio code, Gephi, RAWGraphs, Pandas/Python.
Experience or interest in ML is a plus. As an indication, this is an incomplete list of tools we have been using. Note it doesn’t mean you have to be fluent in all, but willingness and ability to learn are essential.
  • Ability to work in a non-hierarchical organisation, where employees set priorities and policies together, and where deadlines are important for effective campaigning.
  • Fluency in English is required.

We offer:

  • A dynamic job in a non-hierarchical organisation in which all staff earn the same salary, within an inspiring international network.
  • A temporary contract of 1 year for 4 days (32 hours) a week. Upon satisfactory performance, a permanent contract will follow.
  • The salary level for 2023 is set at € 4.040,- on the basis of 36 hours a week (full-time) plus 8% holiday allowance. For this position this means € 3.591,- gross per month for 32 hours, plus the holiday allowance. Every year the salaries are adjusted for inflation. Please note that, due to our principle of equality, the salary is not negotiable.
  • A fully paid for pension plan, € 36 net telephone allowance, general net allowance 1% of gross pay, contribution towards trade union membership, reimbursement of commuting costs (up to a fixed amount) and an individual training budget.
  • 5 weeks holidays plus the days between Christmas and New Year.
