Indonesian union leader Emilia Yanti has had a meeting with Tommy Hilfiger director Ludo Onnink at the end of January. The CCC had publicly announced that Ms. Yanti would visit the Tommy Hilfiger headquarters to find out what steps the fashion brand will take to fight labour-rights violations at one of their Indonesian suppliers. The union leader said the talks had been 'positive' and that progress had been booked.
'Although they had no clear plan of action, Tommy Hilfiger convinced us that they take the case seriously," said Ms. Yanti. "They say they are willing to exercise maximum pressure on the PT Mulia management to make them respect the rights of their employees to form unions as they see fit, and to turn back the dismissal of factory union leaders."
According to Ms. Yanti, the meeting also established steps ahead and a continued dialogue between Tommy Hilfiger and the CCC. Tommy Hilfiger is one of two major foreign buyers at the Indonesian factory. The other foreign buyer is Polo Ralph Lauren, who have refused any communication with the CCC and are notorious for poor labour practises worldwide.
